Scheduled Intimacy
Scheduled Intimacy
It’s almost the end of January, isn’t that crazy?
By now most people have made New Year resolutions by now, but me, I don’t do that. I never keep those things anyways. I get so busy with all the things I have to do. I mean, this website isn’t the job that puts food on my family’s table. It isn’t connected to my church, and doesn’t have anything to do with any of the other songwriting, music, or website design work that I do, technically. Yet, I don’t think that I am any different than any of you out there reading our blogs. We are all so busy these days. We can hardly find a minute to breathe. It’s overwhelming sometimes. Have you felt like that too lately?
So, I decided I was going to take action. So, for an unknown amount of time I will be taking my Tuesdays and Thursdays off. I am taking them off from my computer, my iPad, my email, my Facebook, technology in general. I will close it down the night before and not pick it back up until the morning after. I am reserving time in my schedule for intimacy with God.
Will it be hard? Of course.
Will I have days I cheat? Maybe out of necessity.
It’s not always my choosing on what days I have to work on sometimes. But, I am making a clear concerted effort to spend more time with God, in His word, and spending time with my guitar or piano worshipping in song. All these things are extremely important to me as a son, a husband, a father, and a worshipper. But somehow I never seem to have time to do them. That’s really strange, because most of God’s commands have to do with knowing Him in more intimate ways, not knowing our computer, or social networking sites intimately. All the results of my life are in relation to my relationship to Him. So, I better be making my priorities clear, and do first things first.
Here are a couple of verses that show me I need to have this scheduled intimacy:
Hebrews 4:12 ESV For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
2 Peter 3:18 ESV But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
2 Timothy 3:17 ESV That the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
John 9:31 ESV We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him.
Ephesians 6:10-18 ESV Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, …
I need to have this scheduled intimacy because I miss all these things all the time. I bet you miss these things pretty often too. You might be good at prayer, but not good at reading the word. Great at singing songs, but not in prayer. I struggle with all these things all the time. But, it’s time to say, “no excuses.”
Maybe you feel like making a commitment to having technology-free days. Maybe you think you can’t live without, but it’s possible. I will take some of my days off to start meditating on some of the verses I listed here and will be posting a little bit more on why each of these relies on intimacy.
Hope you have a great week!
